In fact, Palitana city is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for the followers of Jainism. More than 800 marble Jain temples built on Shatrunjay hill here are considered the religious identity of this city. Whereas in Jainism, non-violence is considered the supreme principle. For this reason, the Jain saints here were demanding a ban on non-vegetarian food for a long time. About 200 Jain monks went on strike demanding that no violence of any kind, especially killing of animals, should be allowed in Palitana. After continuous protests by Jain monks, the administration closed more than 250 butcher shops and declared the city completely vegetarian.

Cities like Rajkot, Vadodara, Junagadh and Ahmedabad have also banned the sale of non-vegetarian food in public places. In Rajkot, orders have even been issued that meat should not be cooked or sold in the open.
