North India is in the grip of severe cold these days. The blanket of dense fog spread from cities to open fields, while in many states the temperature was recorded near or below zero. The Meteorological Department has warned that there is little hope of relief from cold and fog in the coming days.
Coldest night in Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan
The minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius was recorded in Gurugram in Haryana and Bathinda in Punjab. The mercury dropped to minus 0.4 degrees in Fatehpur in Sikar district of Rajasthan. A temperature of 0.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in Lunkaransar (Bikaner) and 1.3 degrees Celsius in Churu.
Pala in NCR
There was frost in many areas of NCR including Faridabad and Rewari. In Gurugram, a thin layer of ice was seen on the windshields of vehicles parked outside houses and dry grass had become brittle. In rural areas, frost was more clearly visible on the ridges of fields and vehicles.
Coldest January day in Delhi after 2023
The minimum temperature in the national capital Delhi was recorded at 3.2 degrees Celsius, which is 4.2 degrees below normal. This was the coldest day of January after 2023. The maximum temperature was 20.6 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum on Tuesday may be around 4 and maximum 20 degrees.
Life affected in Rajasthan
In many districts of Rajasthan the night temperature remained below 8 degrees. Due to dense fog in western Rajasthan, visibility was reduced, due to which traffic was affected in the morning. In many cities and towns, people were seen saving themselves from the cold by lighting bonfires.
Effect of cold on crops
Farmer Devi Ram of Haryana told that in the morning a layer of frost like a white sheet was seen in the fields. Wheat crop benefits from this, but vegetable crops like potato, pea, radish and mustard may suffer loss. Agricultural scientists have advised light irrigation.
Cold wave in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh
There has been severe cold and fog in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh for several days. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh was 3.3 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the cold wave will continue for the next three days.
Some relief in Kashmir, still temperature below zero
There was a slight increase in the minimum temperature in Kashmir Valley, but it still remains below zero. The minimum temperature was minus 2.4 degrees in Srinagar and minus 6.5 degrees in Pulwama. Some parts of Dal Lake and other reservoirs froze.
Rain and snowfall alert in Himachal
There is a possibility of light rain and snowfall in high altitude areas in Himachal Pradesh from January 16. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert regarding cold wave in Chamba district and dense fog in seven districts of the state.
Cold and calm winds in Uttar Pradesh
Cold remained in many parts of Uttar Pradesh. The temperature in Lucknow was recorded at 13 degrees and humidity was 72 percent. In many districts including Prayagraj, Bahraich, Bareilly, Meerut, Gorakhpur, the day temperature remained between 13 to 19 degrees.
