South Korea is scheduled to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit later this month. Leaders of 21 major countries will participate in this conference. But before that, North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, raising security and diplomatic concerns in the region. Experts say that such launches may increase further amid preparations for the conference.
Launch and aiming of missiles
South Korea’s army said that the missiles were fired towards the East Sea (Sea of Japan) and their flight range was about 350 kilometers. Initial speculation was that they would fall in the sea, but later the Army confirmed that they fell within the international border. South Korea’s Joint Staff said they are monitoring possible new launches and exercising caution by sharing intelligence with the US and Japan. North Korea also fired short-range ballistic and cruise missiles in May, before new South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was in office.
Kim Jong Un’s new missile and military display
Earlier this month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un demonstrated the new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile at a military parade held in Pyongyang. It was described as North Korea’s most powerful missile. China, Russia and other global leaders were also present in this parade. This parade was organized on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party.
North Korea’s policy
Pyongyang has repeatedly challenged global sanctions and has said the weapons program is necessary to defend against potential American and South Korean threats. US President Donald Trump has expressed the possibility of meeting Kim again this year. North Korea also made it clear that it will not give up its nuclear weapons, but is ready for talks.
