
Heavy rains and floods have caused havoc in many states of Northeast India. So far more than 30 people have died in Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and other states while thousands of people have been affected.

On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur and inquired about the situation. He assured the affected states to provide all possible assistance from the Center. Amit Shah wrote on X (East Twitter), “The Modi government is standing like a rock with the people of the Northeast.”

The flood situation in Assam remains critical. State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed people to be vigilant, especially in areas which are settled in river banks or lower areas. On Sunday, there was news of the death of two more people in Assam, due to which the death toll in the state has increased to 8. The situation is the worst in districts like Karimganj, Silchar and Halakandi.

Rescue operations are going on in many areas due to floods in Manipur. The Indian Army, Assam Rifles and the state administration have started a large -scale rescue operation. So far, about 1,500 people have been evacuated from Imphal East and West districts. Senior army officials said that relief teams were cautious before the rains and immediate action was taken in view of the situation.

So far 9 people have died in Arunachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced compensation of four lakh rupees to the families of the deceased and appealed to the people to be vigilant. 6 people have died in Meghalaya and 5 in Mizoram.

Hundreds of tourists are stranded due to heavy rains and landslides in Lachen and Lachung areas of Mangan district of Sikkim. The road has been disrupted due to the breakdown of a bridge and the boom of the Teesta River. The local administration has intensified relief work.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, expressing concern over the situation in Lakhimpur and Sivasagar districts in Assam, has asked Congress workers to get involved in relief work. At the same time, Priyanka Gandhi also wrote on Twitter, “Loss of life and property due to heavy rains in the Northeast is extremely tragic. Governments should speed up relief work and Congress workers should help people in every way possible.”
