The Nepal government took a major decision on 4 September 2025 and banned 26 social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube and X. But this decision has created a ruckus in Nepal. Thousands of youths in Kathmandu took to the streets and reached the Parliament House. One person died and 80 people were injured in this protest. The government has imposed curfew in Kathmandu and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on the Indo-Nepal border has increased the surveillance. Where is the ban on social media?
Let us tell you that Nepal is not the only country where there is a ban on social media. Strict rules are also applicable in many other countries. The first name comes from China.
China
There are strict restrictions on social media in China. Here platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X are completely banned. This is the reason that China’s internal things cannot come forward to the world. China has promoted its indigenous platforms such as WeChat and Douin. There is a provision of heavy fine and even jail sentence for using these apps.
North korea
Kim Jong is almost equal to the common people for social media and internet in North Korea under his rule. Only government employees are given limited internet access. It is impossible to post anything on social media here and can be punished for illegal activity.
Iran
Iran also has platforms like Facebook, X and YouTube in the name of national security. The government implements strict censorship and a strict punishment on post -government posting on social media, which may include even a jail or death sentence.
Afghanistan
Social media has also been banned in Afghanistan. Here, taking pictures of anything alive and sharing it gives Taliban punishment.
Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia, the government keeps a close watch on social media. The government may have a jail, penalty or death sentence for the post that hurts anti -government or religious sentiments. In 2022, a person was sentenced to death on Twitter for an anti -government post.
