‘Sholay’ tied the audience with the story of action, drama and friendship, while ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’, painted in the color of devotion and faith, created a panic at the box office. Both these films not only won the hearts of the audience, but also broke many records and left their indelible mark in Indian cinema. While ‘Sholay’ was known for her grandeur and star power, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ won the hearts of the audience on the strength of simplicity and faith. The simultaneous release of both films added a new chapter in cinematic history.

Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Sholay’ is considered one of the most prestigious films of Indian cinema. Adorned with stars like Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan, the film was a multi-starrer master piece. Salim-Javed’s writing and R.D. Burman’s music gave it a different place. Songs like ‘Yeh Dosti’, ‘Mehbooba-Mahbooba’ and ‘Holi Ke Din’ are equally popular today.

The story of ‘Sholay’ revolves around Jai and Veeru’s friendship, Thakur’s fire and Gabbar’s villainy revolves around. Initially the film received mixed response, but gradually it became the choice of the audience. ‘Sholay’ not only made records of earnings at the box office, but also created history in theaters for years. Its dialogue, such as ‘how many men were there?’ And ‘Do not dance in front of Basanti, In …’ is still on people’s tongue.

On the other hand, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’, directed by Vijay Sharma, was a low budget religious film, which gave a tough fight to a grand film like ‘Sholay’. Adorned with actors like Kanta Gupta, Anita Guha and Bharat Bhushan, the film kept devotion to Santoshi Maa at the center. This film was the story of a woman who crosses difficulties with her faith and devotion.

After the release of the film, people started performing aarti while watching movies in theaters and idols of Santoshi Maa started to be installed in the temples. Not only this, people used to take away the slippers in the theater and also bounced money on the screen.

If you look at the other songs of the film, ‘Jai Jai Santoshi Mata, Jai Jai Maa’, ‘Here and where there is a dekhoon’, ‘I do your fast,’, ‘Help me, Santoshi Mata’ also made a lot of trouble at that time.

The film was made at a low cost, but it broke many records by earning great earnings at the box office. The film lasted more than 45 weeks in theaters.
