There is going to be a big change in the working environment of the country. The Odisha state government decided to increase the maximum daily work time in all commercial establishments and factories from 9 hours to 10 hours. Along with this, women will be allowed to work in night shifts and overtime salary for workers will be increased. This change is probably being done for the first time in any state in the country.

In the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, several important amendments for factories and commercial establishments were approved. The aim of these amendments is to increase productivity, ease of doing business and encourage economic activities. The Chief Minister said that now the daily maximum work time will be 10 hours, but no more than 48 hours of work can be done in a week. These rules will apply to all industries, factories, shops and commercial establishments.

New opportunities for women

After amending the Factors Act, women will be allowed to work in night shifts from 7 am to 6 am. However, this will be possible only on their written consent. Also, the safety of women and the conditions set by other state government will be taken care of.

The state government can extend the total time of work to 6 hours without a break through notification. If there is a shift time of up to 12 hours, then the brake in the middle will be mandatory. In this way, the total work time will not be more than 13 hours with the break. The total work time including overtime in the week will not be more than 60 hours.

Overtime pay increase

The employees working on overtime will now be doubled by double payments. Apart from this, the overtime limit has been increased from 115 hours to 144 hours on the basis of quarter in any financial year.

Facilities for shops and commercial establishments

These amendments will apply to all shops and commercial establishments in which 20 or more employees are employed. Now business establishments will have the option to keep 24×7 and 365 days open.

What will be the benefit?

The Chief Minister said that these reforms will reduce the legal burden on small businesses and will boost entrepreneurs. At the same time, it will also help to increase the income of the employees because now there will be an opportunity to do more overtime.
