Some of these countries are such that the ban has been in effect since 2004. However, Saudi has not given separate names of those countries, which have been continuously under sanctions since 2004.

Why was this decision taken?

According to Saudi Arabian officials, this ban has been imposed due to the risk of spread of bird flu (Avian Influenza). However, it exempts those poultry products which are heat-treated or undergo other scientifically proven processes.

Impact of Saudi decision on India

Experts in India believe that this decision of Saudi is not going to have much impact on India because Saudi’s share in India’s total poultry imports is very less, hence it is not expected to have any impact on the Indian markets. However, Saudi’s complete ban on import of poultry and eggs from Bangladesh is indeed a blow as it is likely to harm the emerging poultry export industry like Bangladesh.
