ATM Cash Withdrawal: In this new era of digitalization, everything from bill payment to recharge is happening online. Many times, if we go to the market with Rs 100 or Rs 500 notes, the shopkeepers keep saying, ‘Brother! There is no change. In this era of online payment, there is a shortage of small notes, which are needed for everything from paying auto-rickshaw fare to purchasing small items. . However, the government says that there is no shortage of small notes in the market. Now the plan is to withdraw even smaller notes from ATMs.
What is the government’s plan?
Last Tuesday, the Central Government told the Parliament that there is no shortage of small notes in the country. In response to a question, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that notes of Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50 are already in circulation in large numbers. However, during cash withdrawal from ATM we often get only Rs 500 notes. Sometimes even Rs 100 or Rs 200 notes are issued. In such a situation, it sometimes becomes difficult to get change of Rs 500 note.
Talking on this dilemma, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary said that old ATMs are not designed to dispense small notes. However, a pilot project has been started to solve this problem. Under this initiative, special ‘small value dispensers’ are being tested. People will be able to directly withdraw notes of Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50 from these machines. In this way, people will be able to get change while withdrawing cash from ATM.
How many small notes are in circulation?
The government also shared the data of supply of small notes. In the current financial year (till February 26), the Reserve Bank (RBI) supplied Rs 10 notes worth Rs 439.4 crore, Rs 20 notes worth Rs 193.7 crore and Rs 50 notes worth Rs 130.3 crore. Similarly, in the last financial year 2025, Rs 180 crore of Rs 10 notes, Rs 150 crore of Rs 20 crore notes and Rs 300 crore of Rs 50 notes were supplied.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regularly reviews the demand for different denominations and tells how many notes should be printed. According to the government, the demand for low value cash is met by mixing bank notes and coins. Also, digital payments now form a major part of transactions, including low-value payments.
