The Government of Tamil Nadu has taken a big decision giving equal rights to women. The government has made changes in the Tamil Nadu Factory Rules, 1950 to allow women to do about 20 such jobs, which women were prevented from doing because they were considered ‘dangerous’. Apart from this, if a female employee wants to do night shift, there is also a proposal to amend the rule of taking written consent from her.

Last month, the Labor Welfare and Skill Development Department had issued a draft notification to amend the Tamil Nadu Factory Rules. If anyone had any objection to this, it had to be sent to the government within 45 days of the notification issued on September 9. The hazardous occupations in which women are recommended include electrolytic process, lead process, glass manufacturing, manufacturing or treatment of lead or lead. However, the government wants to amend the rules to ban the entry of pregnant women workers into these jobs.

Hazardous gas and petroleum generation, blasting, liming and dyeing of raw leather and hides, graphite powdering, lead material printing presses and type foundries, cashew processing, dyeing of mats, mats and carpets in coir and fiber factories, stenciling and painting and pottery making are also included in the list of jobs in which women can now work.
However, in Tamil Nadu, women are already doing many risky jobs like harvesting seaweed, fishing etc. Now preparations are being made to allow them to work in loud noise and high vibration. This means that in the times to come, they will also have to do work related to poisonous gases, petroleum and chemicals. However, it also has its own disadvantages such as the risk of injury from harvesting seaweed, the fear of contracting diseases from fishing, and the health problems associated with hazardous materials in factories.
