In this match held at MA Chidambaram, Chennai, Canada won the toss and decided to bat first. Opener Yuvraj Samra played a historic inning of 110 runs, becoming the youngest player to score a century in the T20 World Cup. Canada had scored 173 runs.

While chasing the target, New Zealand lost the wickets of both its openers in the powerplay itself. Finn Allen scored a quick 21 runs in 8 balls, but was out on the first ball of the fourth over. In the previous over, Tim Seifert (6) had also returned to the pavilion. Then it seemed that the Canadian bowlers would give a tough fight, but the unbeaten innings of Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra made this target a modest target.
