How GLP-1 Medicines Help Reduce Weight: The case of obesity is increasing rapidly, it is causing all kinds of diseases. That is why WHO has taken a big step to deal with the rapidly increasing problem of obesity across the world. WHO has clearly stated for the first time that the new generation weight loss drugs GLP-1 therapy can play an important role in reducing obesity. These medicines include famous brands like Ozempic and Monjaro, which have become very popular in recent years.

According to WHO, obesity is no longer just a lifestyle issue, but a chronic and re-lapsing disease, which requires long-term treatment and care. Therefore, the organization has advised that long-term use of GLP-1 drugs should be considered for the treatment of obesity in adults. However, pregnant women have been kept out of this.

dangerous levels of obesity

In 2022, more than 37 lakh people died due to diseases related to obesity or increased weight. This number is more than the total deaths of malaria, TB and HIV combined. WHO estimates that if the situation does not change, the number of obese people in the world will double by 2030. WHO chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom says, “Obesity is a global health challenge. Medicines alone cannot end this crisis, but GLP-1 therapy can help millions of people reduce obesity and its associated risks.” However, WHO also said that more data is still needed on the long-term effects and safety of these medicines.

Not a magical cure, but an important weapon

WHO says that GLP-1 drugs should not be seen as medicines alone, but should be combined with many things including-

  • better eating habits
  • regular physical exercise
  • behavior modification

What do experts say?

Dr. Shailesh Jena, an endocrinologist at Shaheed Hospital in Raipur, says that this new guideline of WHO is a step taken in the right direction. According to him, “GLP-1 drugs have given better results than expected in the treatment of obesity. These drugs control appetite, improve metabolism and increase insulin sensitivity. In such a situation, they can prove to be a great help for patients on whom the effect of diet and workout is limited.” According to Dr. Shailesh Jena, obesity is not a simple problem of weight gain, but a metabolic disorder in the body, which needs long-term management.
