Be it opening a bank account, availing benefits of government schemes, pension or gas subsidy, linking PAN-Aadhaar or filing income tax return, your Aadhaar card is needed everywhere. But the most important thing in every work related to Aadhaar is OTP, which is sent by UIDAI to the mobile number registered in your Aadhaar.
But in such a situation, a question often comes to mind that what will happen if that mobile number gets switched off, gets stolen, lost or you are not using that number at all? In such a situation, it becomes difficult to do any online work related to Aadhaar. Therefore, it is very important to update your new mobile number in Aadhaar. So let us know how to add a new mobile number if the old number linked to Aadhaar has been stopped.
Can I add a new mobile number?
UIDAI has stopped the facility to change mobile number online due to security reasons. If mobile number can be changed online, then anyone can misuse all the services related to Aadhaar by changing your number without your permission. To prevent this fraud, biometric verification of the person has been made mandatory when adding a new mobile number, which can be done only at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra. If your old number has been switched off, then you can link the new mobile number to Aadhaar with some easy methods.
How to add a new mobile number?
1. By visiting the nearest Aadhaar Seva Center – The first step to add a new number is to find an Aadhaar enrollment center near you. You can easily find the center nearest to you by visiting the UIDAI website. In which enter state, district or pin code. After this, information about the nearest Aadhaar center will appear on the screen.
2. Fill the Aadhaar Update Form – As soon as you reach the centre, you will get an Aadhaar Update and Correction Form. In this you will have to write your name, Aadhaar number and new mobile number. Keep in mind that there is no need to write the old mobile number in the form.
3. Biometric verification will be done – After submitting the form, the operator takes your fingerprint and iris scan to confirm your identity. This process is necessary so that it can be decided that the change in Aadhaar is being made by the same person who is actually its real owner.
4. Deposit the fee and take receipt – The government fee for updating mobile number is Rs 50. After depositing the fees, you will get a receipt on which a URN is written. With this URN you can go online and check the status of your request.
How to check status?
If you want to know whether your new mobile number is linked to Aadhaar or not, then go to UIDAI website and select Check Aadhaar Update Status or Verify Aadhaar option. Enter the Aadhaar number in it, fill the captcha and you will immediately know whether the update is complete or not. Often UIDAI also sends updated information through SMS. Usually it takes 24 hours to 5 days for the mobile number to be updated. But according to UIDAI guidelines this process can take up to 90 days.
