When India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, New Delhi maintained diplomatic contacts with Washington in many ways. During this, talks were held with the Trump administration through security, trade, political and media channels.
According to India Today report, from late April to October 2025, Indian officials appealed for continuous phone calls, meetings and briefings with senior American officials. On April 24, 2025, India appealed for talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick and the office of Vice President JD Vance. Through these, efforts were made to take trade related discussions forward as quickly as possible.
Talks continued amid Operation Sindoor
Despite the start of Operation Vermillion, trade talks continued till early May. On May 7, the day the operation began, the Indian Embassy in Washington called Brett Baier of Fox News for an interview, in which Operation Sindoor was clearly mentioned. President Trump and his senior advisers keep a close eye on Fox News and contact with the channel is seen as a way to influence things inside the White House.
By the end of May, India started giving information to the US National Security Establishment. On May 27, Indian officials appealed to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and the Deputy Secretary of Defense for a meeting with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. On May 31, Indian officials in Washington DC appealed to meet Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Such efforts are often made to resolve differences between multiple agencies.
Jaishankar meets Vance and Rubio
India appealed for a meeting of Vice President JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on June 1. Apart from this, India also maintained contact with Capitol Hill. Business talks continued amid discussion of Operation Sindoor in Washington. Records show that there were repeated conversations between Indian officials and US Trade Representative Greer and Commerce Secretary Latnick during May, June and July 2025. By August, trade related discussions became more intense.
India appealed to Finance Minister Scott Besant for talks, which brought the Finance Department into the talks which were previously focused only on the Department of Trade and Commerce. In September and October 2025, Indian officials met with several people close to President Trump, including White House communications assistants and senior political advisers.
Operation Vermillion disappeared from Washington’s debate
The Indian Embassy in Washington DC was contacted for comment on these matters, but they did not respond. Despite months of negotiations, India received continued tariff shocks and public condemnation from the White House. This is in sharp contrast to President Trump’s first term, when such differences rarely surfaced publicly. Negotiations continued until the end of October 2025, while Operation Vermillion largely disappeared from public debate in Washington.
