Another controversy has emerged in the India vs Pakistan match of the Women’s World Cup 2025. After the toss controversy, Pakistan opener Muniba Ali’s run out is in discussion. The controversy has taken a formidable form because Muniba was first called not out, but the third umpire reviewed again and found that Muniba’s bat was in the air. Therefore, the verdict was changed to call him out.
This incident is from the last ball of the fourth over of the Pakistani innings. Kranti Gaur was bowling, his ball hit Muniba Ali’s pad, so Team India appealed for LBW. The umpire called him not out, but in the meantime Muniba stood out of her crease. His feet were out of the crease, but there was a delay in landing the bat on the ground.
In the first replay, it was shown that Muniba had given his bat to the ground, but after that he raised it again. Incidentally, the ball collided with the stumps at the same time when he picked up the bat again in the air. Earlier Muniba was called not out, but the third umpire reviewed the verdict and found that Muniba’s bat was in the air at the time of the ball stumps. This decision was not liked by Pakistan team captain Fatima Sana, who came out of the dressing room to express objection to it. Fatima was also seen arguing with the fourth umpire.
What does the rule say?
Rule 30.1.1 in MCC’s Rule Book states that the batsman will be considered out of the ground until a part of his body or bat is hinged from the ground at that end. At the same time, Rule 30.1.2 says that the batsman will not be considered out of ground when he grounds a part of the body or bat inside the popping crease while running or diving, even if the player’s contact with the popping crease is lost after that. Since Muniba Ali was neither racing nor diving, she was called out.
