The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 have been released and once again Oxford University has become the top university in the world. Oxford has achieved this prestigious position for the tenth consecutive year. In the ranking, China’s Tsinghua University remained at 12th place for the third consecutive year, while Peking University remained at 13th place. The special thing is that this time not a single Indian university is included in the top 100.

For the first time in 14 years, there has been a decline in the performance of universities in Asia. Indian universities are not in the top 100. Despite this, India ranks second after America in the total number of listed universities. China has kept its position strong with 13 universities. National University of Singapore (NUS) stood at 17th position this time.

America’s dominance

7 universities of America are included in the top 10. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is in second place. This time Princeton University has achieved its highest ever ranking by reaching joint third place. The number of six universities in the top 20 has decreased compared to last year. The number of American universities in the top 100 has dropped to 35, while a total of 102 American institutions are included in the top 500, which is the lowest record so far.

uk situation

Three British universities are included in the top 10. Oxford is at first place, Cambridge is at third place and Imperial College London is at eighth place. Of the 105 ranked UK universities, 27% have declined in rank and only 12% have seen an improvement. The London School of Economics (LSE) is ranked 52nd and the University of Warwick is ranked 122nd.

condition of indian universities

The position of Indian universities was disappointing in this ranking. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been ranked between 201-250. Jamia Millia Islamia is included in the ranks 401-500, Banaras Hindu University 501-600, IIT Indore 501-600, Mahatma Gandhi University 501-600 and Aligarh Muslim University 601-800. This shows that Indian higher education institutions can still improve their performance at the global level.
