The peace talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan held in Qatar’s capital Doha recently have reportedly hit a deadlock, as Islamabad has accused the Taliban of taking a different stance on security issues besides cooperating in anti-terrorism efforts.
The second round of talks took place in the Turkish capital Istanbul on Saturday, which was organized in view of the ceasefire of October 16. This ended the deadliest conflict between the two sides since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021.
Pakistan accused Taliban
Pakistan has made clear and evidence-based demands to the Taliban to curb cross-border terrorism, but the Islamic group’s illogical arguments have raised serious doubts about their willingness to cooperate, the report said, Pakistan’s Geo News reported.
Radio Pakistan reported that the second round of talks focused on creating a joint monitoring and inspection mechanism to curb cross-border terrorist activities and reducing trade barriers. The possibility of building a long-term political understanding between the two sides was also discussed in the discussion.
Islamabad warned
Geo News, quoting sources, has said in the report that Taliban is not ready to cooperate or accept the ground realities. It said that Turkiye is trying to help the Taliban delegation understand the seriousness of Pakistan’s concerns. The report said Islamabad has warned that providing any kind of shelter to terrorists targeting its territory would be unacceptable.
As soon as the second round of talks began, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif warned that if peace talks fail, a full-scale war will break out with the Taliban. Speaking to reporters, he said that there has been no clash on the border in the last four-five days and 80 percent of the points agreed upon in the first round of talks in Doha have already been implemented.
