Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday (December 26) warned that India cannot ignore Pakistan’s changing military strategy, especially their focus on hypersonic missile systems. He talked about the growing influence of Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir and his increasing anti-India fundamentalism. The Congress MP said that India has learned lessons from past experiences with Pakistan and hence we should be fully prepared.
In an interview with India Today, Shashi Tharoor said that after drones, rockets and missiles, now they (Pakistan) are pursuing hypersonic technologies, they are changing their military strategy, so we cannot take it lightly. Referring to the internal situation in Pakistan, Tharoor described it as extremely problematic, where there is a nominal government and complete control of the army. He cited economic instability and dependence on foreign aid as factors that could encourage military adventurism.
‘Army’s agenda always dominates in Pakistan’
Tharoor said that Pakistan is a very problematic country at many levels, which is dominated by the army, hence the agenda of the army will always dominate the policies there. The Congress MP said that Pakistan is economically very fragile. It has received considerable funding from various international and western donors. In such a situation, economic fragility often leads the country towards military adventurism.
What was said while comparing the two economies?
While comparing both the economies (India-Pakistan), Tharoor said that Pakistan’s GDP growth rate is 2.7 percent, while India’s growth rate is around 7 percent or more. He also talked about Pakistan’s growing influence in areas where India has a strong presence. The Congress MP said that Pakistan is expanding in sectors like textiles and agriculture, which can increase competition in regional markets.
