Pakistan’s well-known human rights lawyer Iman Zainab Mazari-Hajir and her lawyer husband Hadi Ali Chattha were arrested on Friday while going for an appearance in an Islamabad court. Iman and her husband were going to Islamabad to appear before the Additional District and Sessions Court in the case related to the controversial tweet, in connection with which Judge Mohammad Afzal Majoka had issued arrest warrants against them on January 16. Iman’s mother Dr. Shireen Mazari confirmed the arrest of her daughter and son-in-law.

Shireen was the Human Rights Minister in the government led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He said in a post on ‘X’ that Iman and Hadi ‘have been arrested and taken to unknown places in separate cars.’

Shirin wrote, ‘Fascism is at its peak. The cowardly men in power will be very happy with this achievement. He also shared some videos in which police vehicles can be seen chasing Iman and Hadi’s car and officers stopping the car and opening its doors.

Shireen claimed in another post that police resorted to violence against bar members, including breaking car windows. He alleged, ‘It seems that they (policemen) also did violence to Iman and Hadi.’

To avoid arrest, Iman and Hadi spent two consecutive nights in the office of Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) President Wajid Ali Gilani. Geelani, who was present with Imaan at the time of their arrest, claimed that the authorities had assured that the couple would not be arrested while on their way to the court appearance.

The IHCBA president alleged that the police used violence against the couple and broke the vehicle windows, forcing Iman and Hadi to get out of the car. He said that the police officers also pushed (IHCBA) Secretary Manzoor Jazza and did violence to him also.

Geelani warned of protests and said, ‘The authorities should stop the repression. If they do not do this, then the lawyers’ agitation like 2007 will be started again.

The IHCBA, Islamabad Bar Association (IBA) and Islamabad Bar Council (IBC) issued separate statements condemning the arrest of Iman and Hadi. IHCBA and IBA announced a strike on Friday, while IBC called on lawyers to go on strike on Saturday.

The case against the couple related to a controversial social media post is based on a complaint lodged with the Islamabad-based National Cyber ​​Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on August 12, 2025. Charges were framed against him in this case on October 30 last year.

In the complaint lodged with the NCCIA, Iman has been accused of ‘propagating discourses consistent with hostile terrorist groups and banned organisations’, while her husband has been accused of re-posting some of her posts.
