India-pakistan tension: When India got independence from the British in 1947, the tension between India and Pakistan started. Do you know that soon after independence, the Pakistani Army tried to capture the beautiful Lakshadweep Island in the Arabian Sea?
When India and Pakistan were divided, no country had a direct authority on Lakshadweep. Pakistan leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah wanted Muslim -majority areas like Hyderabad, Kashmir and Junagadh to join Pakistan, but India’s Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel joined these princely states in India with his intelligence. When these big states were joining India, Lakshadweep was different at that time and because it was far away, it did not pay much attention to it. At that time Bangladesh was also a part of Pakistan and was called East Pakistan.
When Pakistan planned to capture Lakshadweep
When India was partitioned and formed Pakistan in 1947, India focused on joining many princely states in their country after independence from the British. The British had given exemption to these princely states that they could join India or Pakistan. Most of the small princely states chose to be a part of India. When India was engaged in joining the big princely states, no one was noticed on the small island like Lakshadweep. If most of the population was Muslim there, Pakistan felt that it could take it under its possession.
In the end of 1947, Pakistan Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan planned to capture Lakshadweep. He sent a warship to Lakshadweep with the Pakistani Army and the Navy. They were ordered that if no Indian soldiers are found there, they should hoist the Pakistani flag and claim their claim on Lakshadweep.
When Pakistani warship returned
India got news of this plan of Pakistan. At that time, India’s Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel decided that Pakistan would not be allowed to occupy Lakshadweep. He ordered the Revenue Collector of Travancore to immediately go to Lakshadweep with some soldiers and hoist the tricolor there. The Collector, accepting the order of Patel, went with the soldiers and hoisted the Indian flag in Lakshadweep. After some time a Pakistani warship reached there, but after seeing the tricolor, he returned without doing anything. Lakshadweep survived the possession of Pakistan with the rapid wisdom of Sardar Patel and today this calm and beautiful island is a part of India.
