Meta Layoffs: Last year, many big IT and tech companies around the world, including Microsoft and TCS, laid off employees on a large scale. Now there are indications that this trend does not seem to be stopping even in the year 2026. Social media giant Facebook’s parent company Meta is preparing to lay off more than 1,500 employees this year. This layoff will be done in Meta’s Reality Labs division, where employees are working in different roles.
This step taken by Meta reflects a major strategic change of the company. The company is now focusing on heavy investment in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data center, due to which efforts are being made to reduce costs in other segments.
Meta will make big layoffs
According to the New York Times report, the formal announcement of layoffs can be made on Tuesday. This decision will affect about 10 percent of the workforce working in the Reality Labs unit. At present about 15,000 employees are working in this division.
Reality Labs is an important division of Meta, which handles the work of products and platforms related to Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). It started as Oculus, a startup making VR headsets. This startup was founded by Palmer Lucky and later received funding from the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Oculus was acquired by Facebook in 2014, after which it became the central hub of Meta’s VR and AR hardware and software.
Uneasiness among employees before announcement
Even before the formal announcement of layoffs, the turmoil within the company has intensified. According to the New York Times report, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth has called an important meeting of all Reality Labs employees on Wednesday. This is being described as the most important meeting of the year.
Employees have been instructed to attend this meeting personally. The special thing is that this meeting has been called just a day before the announcement of possible layoffs, due to which there is an atmosphere of anxiety and uncertainty among the employees.
