World blood donor day 2025: World Blood Donar Day was started in the year 2004 by World Health Organization (WHO), International Red Cross Society, ISBT and many organizations together. 81 million units of blood are collected every year globally
Voluntary blood donation: According to the 2006 data of WHO, only 49 of the 124 countries had the standard of voluntary, non-paying blood donation. The culture of voluntary blood donation in developed countries such as United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia is strong. WHO estimates that about 81 million units of blood are collected globally.
The rate of blood donation is higher in high -income countries, as there is a better system of organized blood banks and awareness campaigns. In developing countries, such as Ghana, replacement donation (when families or friends donate blood) are common, which reduces the rate of voluntary donation.
