Tax collection in India is a big source of income of the government every year. If we look at the data of the Income Tax Department and the Ministry of Finance, there are some states in the country which go ahead of other states. In the year 2024-25, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are among the top 5 states which pay the most taxes.

Maharashtra- leading

Maharashtra is constantly leading GST contribution. In FY 2024, the state collected Rs 3.8 lakh crore. In April 2025, this figure was Rs 41,645 crore. However, this growth rate came down slightly to 11 percent. Despite this, Maharashtra is the highest tax paying state in the country.

Gujarat- fast growing collection

Gujarat recorded a GST collection of Rs 1.74 lakh crore in 2024-25. At the same time, its contribution was Rs 14,970 crore only in April 2025. On an annual basis, there was a growth of 13 copies here.

Karnataka- at number three

Karnataka is also in a strong position in GST collection. In 2024, he deposited GST of Rs 1.43 lakh crore in the state. Whereas in April 2025, its figure reached Rs 17,815 crore.

Tamil Nadu-Contribution of more than one lakh crores

Tamil Nadu, a large industrial state of South India, also plays a big stake in GST. In FY 2024, GST of Rs 1.2 lakh crore came from here. In April 2025, there was a collection of Rs 13,831 crore.

Uttar Pradesh- Place in Top 5

In Uttar Pradesh too, GST collection is maintaining its strength. In 2024, the state contributed Rs 1.5 lakh crore. Its collection stood at Rs 13,600 crore in April 2025.

Why tax contribution is necessary

The state’s tax contribution is not just a revenue figure. Rather it tells how strong the economy is. While states like Maharashtra and Gujarat are known for big industries and corporate hubs, states like UP and Tamil Nadu are constantly moving forward and can make a big contribution in the coming times.
