Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence located in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir is once again in the headlines. The decision of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has deeply worried not only the college administration but also the students and teachers. The medical college which had got permission to run MBBS course only a few months ago, has now suddenly withdrawn the same permission. Many questions are being raised regarding this entire matter.
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence was given permission to run MBBS course for the academic session 2025-26. This was the first batch of the college, in which a total of 50 students took admission. Students had taken admission on the basis of NEET exam and studies had also started. The sudden decision to withdraw permission proved to be a big blow to the college.
Controversy started regarding admission
Some organizations had started protesting right after admission in the college. Out of 50 students included in the first MBBS batch, 44 students were from the Muslim community. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti raised objection regarding this. The committee said that this college was built with the donated money of Mata Vaishno Devi Temple, hence students from Kashmir should not be given admission here. Continuous demonstrations were held regarding this demand.
Sudden inspection, questions raised
On January 2, the NMC team made a surprise inspection of the college. The college administration says that information was given over phone just 15 minutes before the inspection. At that time winter holidays were going on and many teachers were on leave. Despite this, the college gave full cooperation to the investigation team. Officials allege that the team’s attitude was pre-determined and the investigation seemed like a formality.
NMC listed many shortcomings
After inspection, NMC withdrew the permission of the college. The Commission said that the college does not have the infrastructure and staff as per the prescribed standards. It was told in the report that there is a shortage of about 39 percent in the number of teachers. The shortage of tutors and senior residents was said to be 65 percent. Apart from this, the number of patients in OPD was less, the bed filling rate was 45 percent and the condition of ICU beds was also said to be not satisfactory.
College administration denied the allegations
College officials and teachers have termed the NMC report as wrong. He says that many facts in the report are not correct. For example, the number of books in the library was stated to be only 75, whereas in reality there are more than 2,700 books. The number of journals is also in hundreds. Similarly, the number of operation theaters was stated to be two, whereas there are eight operation theaters in the college.
Controversy over the number of patients also
The college claims that more than 400 patients had come to the OPD on the day of inspection, but the report showed this number to be much less. Bed occupancy rates and delivery issues were also misrepresented. College officials say that the number of patients anyway reduces around the New Year, which was ignored.
Resentment among teachers and staff
Many doctors and employees of the college are extremely disappointed with this decision. He says that he had decided to strengthen this new institution by leaving for better opportunities. Now their future is hanging in the balance due to the sudden cancellation of permission. Many teachers said that their hard work and contribution was completely ignored in this decision.
