Persian Gulf Hot Water: During the increasing tension between Iran, Israel and the United States in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf has once again come into the focus of the world’s attention. Although this area is often discussed due to geopolitics and oil routes, there is another very unique thing here. This is its very hot water. In fact, the Persian Gulf is considered one of the hottest seas in the world. Let us know why its water is so hot.

What is the reason behind this hot water?

The biggest reason for the Persian Gulf being so hot is its shallow depth. Unlike most oceans, which can be thousands of meters deep, the average depth of the Persian Gulf is only about 35 to 50 meters. Because the water is very shallow, sunlight can heat it quickly. Due to less amount of water to absorb and distribute heat, its temperature increases very rapidly. The water temperature here reaches 35 degree Celsius to 38 degree Celsius.

surrounded by desert

Another big reason is the location around the bay. The sea is surrounded by extremely hot desert areas of the Arabian Peninsula. During the summer months, the air temperature in desert areas often rises to 45 degrees Celsius or more. When this very hot air passes over the surface of the ocean, it transfers heat to the water.

Moisture traps heat over the ocean

Atmospheric conditions play a big role in keeping water warm. When the northwest Shamal winds weaken and the seasonal winds associated with the Indian monsoon intensify, the humidity level in this area increases. Excess moisture acts like a blanket over the ocean. Due to this the heat does not come out easily. This is the only reason why hot water remains trapped near the surface and the temperature keeps increasing.

High amounts of salt retain heat

The Persian Gulf is also known for having much higher salinity than many other seas. There is a lot of evaporation in this area and the fresh water coming from the rivers is less. For this reason the level of salt in water remains high. Highly saline water retains heat better.
