If you use Unified Payments Interface (UPI), then this news is very important for you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a new rule, according to which UPI services will not work on mobile numbers being used from April 1, 2025. This step has been taken to prevent fraud and unauthorized transactions.
What is the new rule?
According to NPCI, if a mobile number is not used for 90 days, then it will be dealled from the respective bank accounts. Its purpose is to increase the security of the UPI system and reduce the risk of fraud.
What is the danger from inactive numbers?
Actually, telecom companies allocate inactive numbers to new users. In such a situation, if the UPI account of the old user is linked to that number, then the new user can make unauthorized transactions. NPCI has taken this decision to reduce this risk.
What if your number is inactive?
If your mobile number is inactive and is linked to your bank account, then you will not be able to use UPI services. This means that there will be difficulty in transacting on payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm.
What do we do now?
Check the mobile number: Check from your telecom provider whether your number is inactive.
Reactive number: If the number is inactive, then get it activated again.
Update the bank account: If the number cannot be active, then link your bank account with a new and active number.
NPCI has directed Banks and UPI platforms to update the list of inactive numbers every week. This will ensure that the new rules are followed and the incidents of fraud are curbed.
What will change in future?
Later, Explus Cantu will be sought from users to link or update the mobile number from UPI ID. This step will further strengthen the user security.
