Plastic Bottle Chemicals Side Effects: The habit of drinking water from plastic bottles may seem simple, but its hidden impact is quite big. In our daily hustle and bustle, we often buy plastic-packed water bottles on the way or wash old bottles and use them again and again. If you also do this, now is the time to stop it. These bottles may look harmless, but the danger hidden in them is harming both our health and the environment.

The most worrying thing is that microplastics reach our drinking water from these bottles. Microplastics are extremely small plastic particles, which are smaller than 5 mm. These enter our water sources in many ways, from the breakdown of old plastic, shedding microfibers from clothes, and wear and tear on the bottles themselves. Today the situation is such that not only the sea, rivers, lakes and even the air is full of microplastics.

How do microplastics affect the body?

When we drink water from a plastic bottle, we unknowingly swallow these microscopic particles as well. Microplastics have been found in bottled water in many international studies, raising serious concerns about their health effects. Some chemicals associated with plastic enter the body and cause further harm, such as hormonal imbalance, increased obesity, insulin resistance, effect on fertility and in some cases even cancer. Although research is ongoing on the long-term effects of these particles, evidence so far suggests that microplastics can cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and the transfer of harmful chemicals in the body.

What can we do?

National Institutes of Health (NIH) had released a report regarding this. Let us tell you what you can do to avoid this. First of all, leave plastic bottles and use steel, glass or BPA free bottles. Second, use a water filtration system that can reduce pollutants, especially microplastics, present in water. Not every filter is perfect, but a filter with better technology significantly reduces the amount of microplastics. The environmental harm caused by plastic bottles is also no less than a threat. A bottle thrown away after every use harms marine life, rivers and the entire ecosystem and further increases the problem of plastic waste.
