Amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting on Sunday (22 March) to review the situation in the petroleum, crude oil, gas, power and fertilizer sectors. The expected impact on the supply chain and all affected sectors and the steps taken to deal with it were discussed in the meeting.
Discussion regarding fertilizers and farmers
In the meeting, the impact on farmers and their fertilizer needs for the Kharif season was assessed. The steps taken over the last few years to maintain adequate stocks of fertilizers will ensure timely availability and food security. Alternative sources of fertilizer were also discussed to ensure continuous availability in future.
‘There will be no shortage in power supply’
It was also decided in the meeting that due to adequate supply of coal stock in all the power plants, there will be no shortage of electricity in India. Apart from this, several measures were discussed to diversify the sources of imports required for chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and other industrial sectors. New export destinations will be developed in the near future to promote Indian goods
Instructions to form a group of ministers and secretaries
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi directed that a group of ministers and secretaries should be formed, which would work diligently with the ‘whole of government’ approach. The Prime Minister also directed that the regional groups should work in consultation with all stakeholders.
Ban on black marketing and hoarding
Prime Minister Modi said that this conflict is a constantly changing situation and the entire world is being affected by it in some way or the other. In such a situation, every possible effort should be made to protect civilians from the effects of this conflict. The Prime Minister also asked for maintaining coordination with state governments to ensure that there is no black marketing and hoarding of essential commodities.

We had extensive discussions on short-term, medium-term and long-term measures, including ensuring continuous availability of fertilizers for farmers, diversifying import sources for key sectors, promoting exports to new destinations, etc. We are committed to protecting our citizens from the effects of conflict.
