As soon as the winter season starts, problems like cough, cold, fever are seen in almost every house. Many people fall ill quickly due to cold air, drop in temperature and weak immune system of the body. In the beginning, it seems like a common cold, but sometimes this mild disease can gradually develop into a serious infection like pneumonia. Especially children, elderly, pregnant women and already ill people are more affected in this season.

In winter, the body temperature becomes lower than normal, due to which viruses and bacteria grow rapidly. The moisture in our nose and throat starts drying up, due to which the infection can easily reach the lungs. This is the reason why cold weather increases the cases of pneumonia significantly. So let us know why pneumonia increases in cold and how to keep ourselves safe in such times.

Why do cases of pneumonia increase in cold?

1. Cold air weakens the lungs – While breathing in winter, very cold air reaches the lungs. This air affects the lung tissues, causing them to get infected quickly.

2. Closed rooms and less ventilation – Due to cold people keep windows and doors closed. The flow of fresh air gets blocked, due to which viruses spread quickly and it becomes easier to infect each other.

3. Weakening of the immune system – Immunity slows down a bit due to falling body temperature in winter. In such a situation, the body is unable to fight the infection and the risk of pneumonia increases.

4. Effect of dry air – Cold and dry air reduces the moisture in our nose and throat. Due to this, viruses and bacteria easily enter the body.

5. Exacerbation of pre-existing diseases – In people with asthma, heart health, diabetes or COPD, the stress on the lungs increases during winter. Therefore, those people are more likely to get pneumonia than others.

How to keep yourself safe in such times?

1. Wear warm clothes and avoid cold wind – Cold air reaches the nose and lungs directly, so wear a muffler or mask while going out.

2. Maintain cleanliness of hands – Viruses spread rapidly, so wash hands frequently or use sanitizer.

3. Let fresh air come into the house – Open the windows for a while to let air in and out of the room

4. Drink plenty of water – People drink less water in winter, due to which the body gets dehydrated. Take water, soup, decoction or hot liquids.

5. Eat immunity boosting food – Consume fruits, vegetables, pulses, dry fruits and things rich in Vitamin C.

6. Stay away from smoking – Cigarettes weaken the lungs and increase the risk of pneumonia manifold.

7. Get vaccinated for flu and pneumonia – Especially children, elderly and already ill people should get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia. Vaccines protect them from serious infections.

8. Keep distance from sick people – Infection spreads very rapidly in winter, so maintain some distance from the sick person.
