Union Minister Chirag Paswan has stressed the need to review the decade-old prohibition law implemented in Bihar. He said that to make its implementation effective, the shortcomings should be identified and removed. Speaking to the media in Patna on Sunday, Chirag Paswan said that it should be assessed whether the purpose for which the law was implemented is being fulfilled or not.

He said, “It is necessary to review whether the objectives with which the law was made are being fulfilled or not. If not, then the shortcomings should be identified and removed.” Paswan clarified that the matter of review should not be seen as an advocacy of lifting the liquor ban.

Need to review any scheme- Chirag Paswan

He said, “When we talk about review, it is often misunderstood that we are talking about ending prohibition. I believe that constant review of any scheme is necessary to improve it with time.” Paswan, national president of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), said that he fully supports the efforts to control alcohol consumption as drug addiction is fatal for both the family and the society.

Ban on alcohol consumption is socially appropriate – Chirag

He reminded that when the Janata Dal United (JDU) government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had implemented prohibition, his party had supported the move even while being in the opposition. “The idea of banning the consumption and manufacture of liquor is justified from the social point of view,” he said. However, Paswan referred to the periodic deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor and allegations of alleged ‘home delivery’ of liquor in the state.

Somewhere poisonous liquor is still being manufactured – Chirag

He said, “There are often reports of deaths due to poisonous liquor. If such incidents are still happening, it means that poisonous liquor is being manufactured somewhere.” Paswan said that in view of these circumstances, a comprehensive review of the implementation mechanism of the law is necessary so that its objectives can be ensured by removing the shortcomings.

It is noteworthy that during the budget session of Bihar Assembly, LJP (Ram Vilas) MLA Madhav Anand had also demanded a review of the prohibition policy. However, JD(U) leaders have ruled out the possibility of reconsidering the law, while BJP has so far received mixed reactions on the issue.
