Discussions of major changes in Pakistan’s politics have become intensified once again. On Tuesday (July 15), the back-to-back meetings between Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari and Army Chief General Asim Munir created a stir in the political corridors. In social media and some Pakistani media reports, it was claimed that President Zardari may resign from his post and General Munir can be replaced. However, the government has completely rejected these reports.

According to the report of the Express Tribune, on Tuesday, General Asim Munir first met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif at PM House. A few hours later, PM Sharif reached Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet President Zardari. The time between these two high-profile meetings was very short, which led to speculation in the political corridors.

Government and ministers denied

Defense Minister Khwaja Asif said in a conversation with the media that the news of President Zardari’s resignation or the Chief of Army Staff is absolutely baseless. He admitted that some media reports had such a claim, but she was later removed. He made it clear that the President has been given complete information about the recent developments and he has expressed confidence in the government.

Asif said, “President Zardari is completely confident about the current government and political process. The Prime Minister made him aware of rumors and reports in which change was being talked about.”

Army chief is not interested in politics

The Defense Minister also clarified that Army Chief General Munir has no intervention in politics. He said that there are regular meetings of the Prime Minister and Army Chief, two or three times a week where security, internal conditions and border issues are discussed.
