Political journey of Jama Khan, the only Muslim minister in the new government of Bihar, a leader close to Nitish Kumar

With the formation of the new government in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has prepared a team of 26 ministers. Jama Khan’s name is included as the only Muslim minister in this cabinet, who will hold the ministerial post from Janata Dal United (JDU) quota. Jama Khan is not only considered close to Nitish Kumar, but his political journey has also been full of ups and downs and interesting turns.

Jama Khan, MLA from Chainpur in Kaimur district, has been the Minority Welfare Minister and may get the same important responsibility in the new government. Born in a Muslim family in Naughara village of Kaimur district of Bihar, Jama Khan’s education was also related to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. He studied till 12th class from Varanasi.

An interesting thing is that he himself said that his ancestors were Hindu Rajputs, who later converted to Islam. Even today, strong family ties remain between his relatives, both Hindu and Muslim.

Many parties, many elections…but won in 2020

Jama Khan’s political journey is full of struggles. In 2005, he contested elections from Chainpur for the first time from BSP but lost. In 2010, he contested elections from Congress, but lost again. In 2015, he again contested from BSP and lost by about 600 votes. Contested elections from BSP in 2020 and won a big victory by about 25 thousand votes.

This victory of 2020 was big, because he defeated the BJP candidate Brij Kishore Bind, who had been consistently strong on this seat. After this victory, he became the only MLA of BSP in Bihar Assembly.

Left BSP and went straight to Nitish Kumar’s cabinet.

After winning in 2020, Jama Khan suddenly took a big decision in January 2021. He left BSP and joined JDU. As soon as he joined JDU, Nitish Kumar expressed confidence in him and made him the Minority Welfare Minister.

Jama Khan openly supported JDU’s stand on many sensitive issues like Waqf Amendment Bill and praised the leadership style of Nitish Kumar. Due to this, the discussion about their closeness increased further.
