Five days after the US attack on Caracas and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro along with his wife, Venezuela has announced that it is releasing a large number of political prisoners. This is being said to be a step to maintain peace. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called the release of the prisoners a praiseworthy step.
“I am closely following the situation in Venezuela and I hope that with (Acting) President Delcy Rodriguez, a new era of good relations between Rome and Caracas will begin,” she told XPost. In this regard, I thank you for the decision to begin the release of political prisoners, including Italians, and I sincerely hope that this process will continue.
Opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado described the release of prisoners from Venezuela as a step to deal with ‘injustice’. He published an audio message on social media. It said, ‘This is an important day that shows that injustice will not last forever and truth, even if bruised, finds its way.’
According to an opposition statement, former opposition candidate Enrique Marquez was also among those released from jail. Marquez expressed joy in a video taken by a local journalist, saying, “Now it is all over.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed the release of five Spanish citizens. Among them is a person with dual citizenship, who was said to be ‘preparing to go to Spain with the help of our embassy in Caracas.’ The ministry described this development as a positive step.
According to media outlet The Guardian, it is not clear how many people are being released. Human rights organizations working in the country estimate that there are between 800 and 1,000 political prisoners in Venezuela, most of whom were detained for taking part in demonstrations after the 2024 elections.
