Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party (JDU) MP Devesh Chandra Thakur has raised questions on the prohibition law, after which political turmoil has intensified in the state. Devesh Chandra Thakur has said that it would be great if the liquor ban law is removed in Bihar. It is not successful. He even said that he had not come when the law was being made and the oath was being administered. He had not taken the oath. Now reactions have started coming from political parties on this.

On Monday (March 02, 2026), RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav said that it is true that Devesh Chandra Thakur had not taken the oath. Not only that, Lalan Singh also did not take the oath. When the prohibition law was being passed in the Bihar Assembly, both of them did not take the oath. I was an MLA at that time. People from the ruling party want liquor to be restarted in Bihar. Patna High Court has also expressed concern over this and said that the future of the youth is going towards dry addiction.

Devesh Chandra Thakur is speaking at the behest of the government: RJD

The RJD leader further said that only people from the ruling party are saying that liquor should be allowed to operate while others are saying that there should be a review. It became clear from his statement that the liquor prohibition law is completely abolished in Bihar. The prohibition law in Bihar has completely failed and the government has also failed. Shakti Yadav said that he (Devesh Chandra Thakur) is a JDU MP, so he is not speaking without the government’s instructions, the government itself wants liquor to be restarted.

JDU has distanced itself from Devesh Chandra Thakur’s statement. JDU spokesperson Anjum Ara said that the decision to ban liquor in Bihar was taken with the consent of all parties. This decision was also appreciated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As far as our MP Devesh Chandra Thakur is concerned, this may be his personal opinion. The government’s stand is clear that prohibition is a very important and bold step towards social reform.

People of Bihar benefited from liquor ban: BJP

On the other hand, BJP has also termed Devesh Chandra Thakur’s statement as a personal opinion. BJP spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, “This may be his (Devesh Chandra Thakur’s) personal views, but I believe that prohibition has greatly benefited the people of Bihar. Especially those women who were always victims of atrocities. People used to fight in their families under the influence of alcohol. That has ended.

However, Rajesh Bhatt, spokesperson of Chirag Paswan’s party LJP Ram Vilas, said, “I heard his statement… This is his personal opinion, although he will answer it, but our party stands firmly with this law.”
