How To Fix Poor Posture In Children: Nowadays, bent waist and protruding neck of children has become a common sight. If you look into any classroom, you will see many children sitting bent over the desk, with their shoulders rounded and their heads pointing forward. Poor posture is no longer just a matter of appearance, it can cause back pain, neck strain, fatigue and even affect breathing and concentration. Let us tell you what experts say about this and what problems it can cause.

What do experts say?

Pediatrics expert Dr Babita Jain told TOI that today’s children are struggling with problems which were earlier seen mostly in adults. The changed lifestyle after the pandemic has put additional pressure on the growing spine of children. He says that screen time is the biggest reason for this growing problem. Due to online studies, prolonged use of smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and laptops, children remain sitting for hours. Often they remain bent over the bed or sofa without proper back support. Gradually this habit makes the shoulders round, the neck bends forward which is called ‘text neck’ and the muscles remain constantly stretched.

outdoor sports a big concern

Along with this, lack of outdoor sports is also a matter of concern. Running, jumping and climbing strengthen the core and back muscles of children. When physical activity decreases, the muscles supporting the spine begin to weaken. The result is that children get tired quickly, sit hunched over and complain of pain. Heavy school bags also add to the problem, especially when children carry them on only one shoulder. Dr. Jain warns that frequent pain in the neck or waist, uneven appearance of shoulders, constant sitting slouched or feeling uncomfortable even in sitting for a short period can be early signs. If timely attention is not given, chronic pain or problems related to the structure of the spine may develop in the future.

How can we fix it?

The good thing is that the solution is not difficult. Motivate children for daily physical activity, include stretching or yoga in their daily routine and control screen time. While sitting, the back should be straight, feet flat on the ground and the screen at eye level. The weight of the school bag should not exceed 10 to 15 percent of the child’s body weight. Small correct habits can protect the spine of children for a long life. Only timely awareness and support of parents can keep children strong, confident and pain free.
