The demographic crisis in China has deepened. The lowest birth rate has been recorded in the country since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. That too when the government has implemented many schemes to increase the family.
These figures increased the concern of the Chinese government
The figures of the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday have surprised everyone. In 2025, the birth rate in China has been recorded at 5.6 per 1000 people. The number of newborn babies has declined by 1.62 million. This total remains 7.92 million. This is 17% less than last year. The total population here has decreased from 3.4 million to 1.405. This is considered to be the biggest decline since 1960.
Xi Jinping’s efforts suffered a setback
These figures have dealt a blow to Xi Jinping’s efforts to create a fertility-friendly society. A shrinking workforce and a rapidly aging population are raising concerns about long-term economic stability and China’s pension system.
Beijing has implemented policies to increase the birth rate. This includes increasing maternity and paternity leave. This includes making marriage registration easier and providing financial assistance.
Government gives subsidy to children below three years of age
There couples get $500 annually for each child under three years of age. The 13% value-added tax on contraceptive drugs and devices has been reimposed from January 1, 2026. However, the people there believe that the amount of subsidy provided by the government is very less. There are some main reasons also. These include the low number of women of childbearing age and declining marriage figures. The biggest flaw in this is the one child policy there. However, it was abolished in 2015.
