President Murmu becomes Honorary Citizen of Lisbon

Moeedas said that with the ‘Off Honor of the City’, President Murmu has become an honorary citizen of Lisbon. Starting his address with the traditional Portuguese greeting ‘Bom Dia’, the President said, “Cultural relations between India and Portugal have been going on for centuries and they have left an indelible mark on our daily lives.” He said, “The common sense of responsibility in international affairs makes us a natural partner on regional and multilateral forums.”

The President said that ‘India has been a valuable partner in promoting our relations with the Portugal European Union as well as the Portuguese countries, where the Portuguese is the official language.’

He said, ‘Evidence of this strong cultural association in Portugal can be seen in the widespread popularity of Indian art, culture, food, yoga and Ayurveda.’

Describing Indian migrants as ‘the foundation of our relations’, he said that they are making valuable contribution in the society and economy of Portugal.

Earlier in his speech, the Mayor recalled the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who cited the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (Vishwa Ek Family) from the Upanishads during the G20. He said, “This sentence tells everything. We should reject social division, we vs them.”

The number of Indian communities in Portugal is around 1,25,000, including more than 35,000 Indian citizens and 90,000 people of Indian origin. Most of these are roots in Gujarat and Goa. The population of Portugal is about one crore.
