Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday declared former MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the by -election in Tarn Taran assembly seat. This seat was vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June. The Election Commission has not yet announced the date of the by -election.
Candidates declared during meeting
In a meeting in Tarn Taran, the Chief Minister announced that Sandhu will be the Aam Aadmi Party candidate for the by -election. Mann told the people, “He (Sandhu) is your choice.” CM Mann was in Tarn Taran to start a project for construction of rural contact roads.

Sandhu has been an MLA three times
Sandhu has been a three -time MLA from Tarn Taran seat. He was elected as an independent candidate in 2002. After this, in 2007 and 2012, he was re -elected on the ticket of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He contested elections in 2017 and 2022 but lost. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party in July.
In the 2022 assembly elections, there were a total of 16 candidates in Tarn Taran seat. Of these, there were 12 male and 4 female candidates. AAP Kashmir Singh Sohal got a total of 52935 votes. His vote share was 40.45 percent. Sandhu got 39347 votes and the vote share was 30.06. Dharambir Agnihotri of Congress got 26535 votes and the vote share was 20.28. Significantly, there is a government of Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. AAP has announced the election bugle by announcing the candidate.
