Police in Patiala has issued a lookout notice against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra. Pathan Majra is absconding in the rape case since September 2. Officials say that several raids were conducted to arrest the MLA but till now no success has been achieved. This matter remains a topic of discussion in Punjab at political and social level.
What is the case and allegations?
On September 1, an FIR was registered against Pathan Majra at the Civil Lines police station on charges of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation. According to PTI, a woman from Zirakpur said in her complaint that the MLA, claiming himself to be a divorcee, had a relationship with her and married her in 2021, even though they were already married. The woman alleged that the MLA sexually harassed her, issued threats and sent ‘obscene’ material. The MLA is absconding since the complaint.
Police action and appeal
To arrest Pathan Majra, local police and special teams raided many places, but he was not found. The police have now issued a lookout notice for him and posters have been put up outside his government residence, private house and bus stand. Also, an appeal has been made to the public that anyone who has information about the accused should immediately inform the police so that it can help in the arrest.
Political stir and MLA’s video statement
Political temperature has increased in Punjab due to the absconding of AAP MLA. Opposition parties have raised questions on the government as to why there is a delay in the arrest of its own MLA. At the same time, in September, Pathan Majra had released a video saying that he had fled to escape the “fake encounter” of the police. He had claimed that the police had fired at his car and he was saved only by the grace of God. Now his lawyers have said that they will soon file a petition for anticipatory bail in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
