India’s two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu once again defeated Malaysia’s Letshna Karupathavan to enter the women’s single pre-quarter finals of the BWF World Championship by defeating Letshna Karupathavan of Malaysia.
Former world champion Sindhu made a comeback despite falling back 12–18 in the first game, defeating the world number 40 Latshana 21-19 21-15 in 42 minutes.
Earlier, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Krasto defeated the Joshua Maggi and Moy Ryan pair of Ireland 21-11 21-16 in just 35 minutes to enter the pre-quarterfinals.
Now to make it to the quarter -finals, this 16th seed Indian pair will face Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Mann and Tse Ying Suet’s fifth seed pair.
In the first round match on Tuesday, Sindhu was struggling with some difficulties against Kaloyana Nalbantova of Bulgaria and she had difficulty in getting rhythm against Letshna. She could not initially bring the Malaysian player under pressure and continued to lag. But in the end she managed to return.
Letshana started aggressively, leading to Sindhu 1-4. The Malaysian player maintained the dominance of 11-8 till the break from his ‘Down-Line Smash’ and fast ‘net play’.
Technical and physically strong Latshana’s aggressive game exposed Sindhu’s deprivation. The Indian player kept lagging behind. The Malaysia player had controlled the score of 18–12. But Sindhu returned here. He made six consecutive points and equalized the score 18-18 in which he also benefited from Letshna’s mistake. The Malaysian players wide a smash under pressure.
Then Sindhu maintained restraint on the score of 19-19 and achieved the ‘game point’ by applying a great smash. Sindhu came ahead for the first time in the match.
The Indian player scored points from Latshana’s weak response on the backline. He then took the game in his name by sending another shot of the rival player long. Sindhu again continued the same rhythm in the second game and took a 5–1 lead.
The Malaysian player was finding it difficult to maintain his pace, causing Sindhu to be 9-5 after 7-3. However, Sindhu also made some mistakes on the backline. But he moved ahead 10-6 from a net cord winner.
After this, Sindhu looked completely under control. Malaysian players got upset due to diversity in his smash. But the Indian player achieved seven matches points and then won the match from the wrong forehand of the Malaysian player.
