After Gautam Gambhir became the coach
It is not that the condition of the Indian team became worse after Gambhir became the coach, but the team won many memorable series and tournaments. For example, in the third ODI, India lost for the first time in Indore, with this, New Zealand won the bilateral ODI series in India for the first time.
Gautam Gambhir was appointed head coach in 2024. After that, for the first time in 27 years, Sri Lanka defeated India in an ODI series. After this, it happened after 36 years when New Zealand defeated India in Test in India. For the first time New Zealand won the Test in India. After this, after 19 years, India lost the Test at Chinnaswamy and for the first time got bowled out within 50 runs in a Test at home.
Questions raised on Gautam Gambhir’s planning
Most of the discussions took place regarding the planning of the head coach. Ajinkya Rahane also expressed dissatisfaction with the continuous changes in the team and unclear roles. Then questions were raised about Nitish Kumar Reddy, who got many opportunities after his brilliant performance in Australia. Similarly, it was said about Harshit Rana that he was getting more opportunities than others, although he impressed with bat and ball in the ODI series against New Zealand.
Players are being given opportunities according to the format, like KL Rahul is keeping wicket in ODI but neither he nor Rishabh Pant is keeping wicket in T20. Suddenly questions were raised on Ishan Kishan’s entry before the T20 World Cup.
Good record in T20
Gautam Gambhir’s journey as a coach in T20 has been wonderful. Out of 27 matches, the Indian team has won 23 and lost only 3 matches. However, in comparison to this, the performance in ODI and Test was not good. Now India’s next stop is T20 World Cup, hence BCCI has waited till this big tournament. Although the board has already said that he is not going anywhere till the 2027 ODI World Cup.
A few weeks ago there was news that BCCI is considering making VVS Laxman the Test coach in place of Gautam Gambhir. On this, Secretary Devjit Saikia had said that this is completely wrong. He had clearly said that no consideration is being given to removing Gambhir, this is simply wrong.
Then NDTV quoted a senior BCCI official as saying that there is no idea of removing Gautam Gambhir till the 2027 World Cup.
