Former off-spinner of the Indian cricket team, Ravichandran Ashwin is once again in the headlines. This time he has openly supported Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and raised big questions on the working style of the team management. While talking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that there is no culture of “knowledge transfer” i.e. sharing of experience in the Indian team. According to him, the team management has completely failed to handle the senior players.
“Kohli-Rohit are not just players”
Ashwin said, “On one side is the team selection, on the other side is Kohli and Rohit. These two players are two parts of the same coin. It is clear from the decisions of the selectors that they want to move forward, but the question is, what should be the method of change with players who have played for the country for more than a decade?”
He further said that it is easy to just call players like Rohit and Kohli “old”, but the experience of such players is more valuable than gold for the team. “When a youngster plays well in IPL, comparisons start immediately, but no one sees what it means to stand on the field in times of pressure.
“Knowledge transfer is not just teaching shots”
Ashwin especially raised the issue of knowledge transfer. According to him, it is not limited to just teaching techniques, but also includes sharing mental strength and ability to withstand pressure. He said, “Kohli and Rohit do not need to prove anything to anyone, but was there ever a system made in the Indian team to teach the young players how to deal with match pressure, how to avoid injuries?”
Ashwin also said that in India there is no concrete plan for the “transition phase”, that is, there is no plan for how the team should go through the phase of change.
“There is no roadmap even in coaching”
Ashwin also gave a strong statement regarding the coaching system. He said, “After Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir was made the coach, but did anyone think how the knowledge or experience would be transferred from Dravid? We do not have any fixed template.”
In the end, he expressed hope that the team management would have already discussed with Rohit and Kohli. If this thing has happened only now, then it is a mistake. If there had been clear talks last year itself, the senior players could have been sent off with respect.
