Rain Of Fish: Imagine you go out in a storm and find fish scattered on the ground. There is no river nearby and flood water is also not visible anywhere. This is not a folk tale or a false story spread on the internet. This is a real and recurring phenomenon that has puzzled scientists for more than 100 years. Let us know about the place where it really rains fishes.

Where does it rain fishes

This incident occurs on a bus in the city of Yoro in the Central American country of Honduras. What makes it especially strange is its geography. Actually Yoro is about 200 kilometers away from the sea. In such a situation, it seems quite strange that it is raining fish.

when does this strange phenomenon happen

It usually rains once or twice a year. This happens after severe thunderstorms between May and July. When residents wake up after hours of heavy rain, they find small fish scattered across fields, roads and rooftops. Many of these fish are still alive when found.

What is the scientific explanation?

Scientists say that pillars of air like tornadoes are formed over water. Powerful storms pull up water along with fish from rivers, lakes or coastal areas. When the storm weakens underground, the fish fall to the ground along with the rain. However, there is some doubt on this because Yoro is far away from the sea and no lake nearby is that big.

Apart from this, it is also said that Yoro is situated on a network of underground streams and caves. During heavy rains these underground water ways get filled. For this reason, the fish living in caves come to the surface.

a religious belief

For locals, science is just part of the story. Many people believe that this phenomenon is a divine blessing associated with Jose Manuel Subirana, a Spanish Catholic priest who lived in Honduras in the 19th century. According to tradition, Father Subirana prayed for three days and nights and asked God to help feed the poor. Soon after, fish started appearing after the storms.

Instead of fear or confusion, people here celebrate this incident. Every year the festival of rain of fishes is celebrated in the city. People collect fish, cook them and share the food with neighbours.
