Rajkumar Kohli was born on 14 September 1930 in Lahore, which is now in Pakistan. His father was also associated with filmmaking, so Rajkumar’s association with films started from childhood.
Along with education, he learned the nuances of filmmaking with his father. In 1963, he started his career with the film ‘Pind Di Kudi’ as a producer. In the initial stages, he gave many hit films in Punjabi cinema such as ‘Main Jatti Punjab Di’ and ‘Dulla Bhatti’, which established him as a producer.
This film gave new direction to Bollywood industry
Rajkumar Kohli’s journey as a director began in 1973, when he made the film ‘Kahani Hum Sab Ki’, but he got his real identity in 1976, when his film ‘Naagin’ came in theaters. The film changed the direction of Hindi cinema. In this, many big stars like Reena Roy, Feroz Khan, Vinod Mehra, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Kumar and Jitendra were seen together.
At that time, it was a big thing to see so many stars in the same film. Along with this, the audience of the film’s horror and thrill was liked by the audience. After the success of ‘Naagin’, the trend of multistarrer and horror films increased in the film industry and on the same lines films like ‘Jani Dushman’, ‘Kalicharan’ and ‘Karj’ were made.
Rajkumar Kohli’s script used to have a tremendous mixture of thrill, revenge, and drama. He directed films like ‘Jani Dushman’, ‘Badal Ki Aag’, ‘Servant Biwi Ka’, ‘Raj Tilak’, ‘Humanity Ke Dushman’, ‘Conspiracy’, and ‘Twenty Years After’, which were popular films of her time.
Luck did not support the son at the time of making a superstar
In his long career, Rajkumar Kohli brought many stars to heights. She gave special identity to artists like Reena Roy, Anita Raj, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani through her films. He worked several times with stars like Dharmendra, Jitendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Sunil Dutt, and Hema Malini. The films made under his direction broke many records and gave him a special place in Bollywood.
Rajkumar Kohli married famous Punjabi films actress Nishi, whom she got two sons-Amman Kohli and Rajneesh Kohli. He launched son Armaan in 1992 from the film ‘Opposition’, in which there were veterans like Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra and Gulshan Grover. However, the film flopped at the box office.
The dream of making son a superstar remain incomplete
After this, he made ‘Aulad Ke Dushman’, ‘Kahar’, and the 2002 film ‘Jani Dushman: A unique story’. Through the ‘Jani Dushman: A unique story’, he tried to renew his own blockbuster ‘Jani Dushman’ of the 70s, but the attempt did not appear to the audience and the film was beaten up, thus the desire to see Armaan Kohli becoming a superstar was left incomplete of Rajkumar Kohli.
Rajkumar Kohli died on 24 November 2023 at the age of 93. He went to the bathroom to bathe in the morning, but did not come out. Son Armaan Kohli broke the door and removed them. After being taken to the hospital, doctors declared Rajkumar Kohli dead. According to reports, he died of a heart attack.
