August 15 is the birthday of actress Rakhi Gulzar along with Independence Day. Born in Ranaaghat, West Bengal in 1947, Rakhi left an indelible mark not only in Hindi but also in Bengali cinema with her performance. His films and characters are still in the hearts of the audience.
Life was full of ups and downs
The story of his life and career is full of ups and downs, courage and talent. Rakhi started the acting career in the year 1967 with the Bengali film ‘Vadhu Varan’. His first film in Hindi cinema was ‘Jeevan Death’ in the year 1970, in which he worked with Dharmendra.
After this, ‘shy’, ‘red stone’ and ‘Paras’ soon established her as a successful actress. In the year 1972, ‘Aankh-Kho Mein’ and ‘Dasta: A PoM of Love’ in 1973 presented his versatility to the audience.
Many awards received in career
Rakhi received the first Filmfare Best Co-Actor Award for ‘Dag’. In 1974, his film ’27 Down ‘received two National Awards. In 1976, the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for ‘Tapasya’ came to her account.
Rakhi made her acting iron in films like ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, ‘Mukaddar Ka Sikander’, ‘Shakti’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Baazigar’, and ‘Karan Arjun’. These dialogues are still settled in the minds of the audience today. In 2003, he received the National Award for the Bengali film ‘Shubho Mahurat’, and the same year the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri.
Personal life was very much discussed
Rakhi’s personal life was also very much discussed. Their first marriage was to Bengali journalist and film director Ajay Vishwas, however, this marriage could not go on much and broke in the year 1965. After this, in the year 1973, he married famous poet, lyricist and director Gulzar. There was a condition in this wedding that Rakhi would leave work in films.
Rakhi accepted this condition, thinking that perhaps she would convince Gulzar. After this, his daughter was born in the year 1973, which he named Meghna Gulzar. But, only a year after the birth of the daughter, there was a rift in Gulzar and Rakhi’s relationship.
Second innings of career
According to media reports, an incident changed everything during the shooting of Gulzar’s film ‘Andhi’. Rakhi questioned Gulzar about this subject, in response to which tension increased and both of them separated.
After this, Rakhi signed Yash Chopra’s ‘Kabhi’, which was the beginning of the second innings of his career. However, both did not divorce for Meghna. In an interview, Rakhi had told, we are the best separate couples. Gulzar still considers me a lot.
Rakhi acted in more than 100 films in her career. However, in an interview, he told that the characters played in ‘Tapasya’, ‘Blackmail’ and ‘Aanchal’ are his favorite. She says, I have lived every character, whether it is the character of a mother or a girlfriend.
