Ramesh Chandra Sen, leader of Awami League, the party of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, died in Dinajpur jail on Saturday (February 7). Officials and local reports have confirmed this. Ramesh Chandra Sen was counted among the top minority leaders of the country. He was the Water Resources Minister in Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Sen, a 5-time MP, had won his last election in the year 2024. According to the report of Bangladesh’s leading newspaper Pratham Aalo, Ramesh Chandra Sen was taken to the hospital at around 9.10 am on Saturday morning when his health deteriorated, where doctors declared him dead. Sen’s death has raised questions over the security of senior jailed Awami League leaders and former ministers.
What did the jail superintendent say?
Quoting the Jail Superintendent, the report said that the former minister’s health suddenly deteriorated around 9:00 am on Saturday morning and he became unconscious. He was immediately taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. At 9.30 the doctors declared him dead. 86 year old Ramesh Chandra Sen was suffering from many diseases. According to people having knowledge of the matter, he was not being taken proper care of inside the jail.
Sen did not run away even after the fall of Hasina’s government
Ramesh Chandra Sen was arrested in August 2024 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. He was facing three charges including murder. In August 2024, pictures of Sen surfaced on social media, in which his hands were tied with a rope. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Awami League leaders were fleeing the country to escape the attacks, but Sen chose to stay at home even during this period. He was sure he had done nothing wrong.
People called Sen’s death murder
He was born on 30 April 1940 in Ruhiya Union of Thakurgaon district. He was Water Resources Minister in Sheikh Hasina government from 2009 to 2014. Sen became MP for the first time by winning the by-election in February 1997. Later he became MP in 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024. In Bangladesh, people have raised questions by sharing the death of Ramesh Chandra Sen on social media. Some people have called it custodial murder. At least 5 top Awami League leaders have died after falling ill in custody.
