In the ongoing civil war in the African country Sudan, the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has kidnapped an Indian citizen. The Sudanese army has declared RSF a terrorist organization. The government there is negotiating for the release of the Indian citizen. There is a conflict going on in Sudan between RSF and the army since 2023, in which more than 13 million people have been displaced so far.
Odisha man kidnapped in Sudan
Sudan’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Abdullah Ali Eltom said on Monday (3 November 2025) that the name of the person who was kidnapped is Adarsh Behera and he is a resident of Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha. He told that his country is coordinating with the Indian Foreign Ministry regarding this matter. Adarsh Behera was kidnapped by rebels in Al Fashir city of Sudan.
‘Will free you from the clutches of rebels’
According to the report of news agency PTI, Abdullah Ali Eltom said, “Even before this, during the siege of a city in Sudan, the Indian Foreign Ministry had contacted us about another of its citizens.” Describing the kidnapping of the Indian citizen as surprising, he said, “We know what we have to do. We also know what the RSF is capable of doing. We will soon rescue Adarsh Behera from the clutches of the rebels.”
Sudan–India bilateral relations
He said, “We have deep relations with India. India has always been an important partner of Sudan in times of peace and war. During this ongoing crisis, India has provided humanitarian assistance to Sudan and will continue to do so. The Government of India has provided medical assistance and food supplies to Sudan, which we greatly appreciate. As Sudan enters the post-war reconstruction phase, we believe India can play an important role as a development partner.”
