Cancer Risk From Spicy Food: People all over the world are fond of spicy food, whether it is Indian curry or Mexican salsa. Red chilli not only increases the taste and heat of food, but also speeds up the metabolism a bit. But in the last few years, scientists have been trying to find out whether eating too much chilli continuously can increase the risk of some cancers related to digestion. According to research, the antioxidant properties present in chilli can be beneficial in small quantities, but consuming too much can increase the risk of oesophagus, stomach and colon cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in India and its cure is completely possible if treatment is started on time.
How dangerous is it to eat too much chilli?
Capsaicin present in chilli is the element that gives it spiciness. It is known for its properties like reducing pain, reducing swelling and fat burning. But mixed results have emerged regarding its effects on cancer. Consuming red chillies in large quantities, especially raw or very spicy ones, for a long time can increase irritation and swelling in the digestive system. Gradually this inflammation can damage the cells, which can increase the risk of cancer.
At the same time, chilli in small quantities, especially if there are enough vegetables, fruits and fiber in the diet, does not cause harm. Eating or cooking chilli with cooling food items like curd reduces stomach irritation.
