Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the life sentence of former Himachal Pradesh IG Zahoor Zaidi. In the case of Suraj, accused in the 2017 Gudiya rape and murder case, who died due to police torture in Kotkhai police station while in police custody, the court put a stay on the sentence awarded by the CBI court and said that the sentence will remain suspended until the hearing on the petition is completed in the High Court.

The High Court, while giving its verdict on Zaidi’s petition on Tuesday (December 23), said that his sentence is suspended until his petition is disposed of. In January this year, a special CBI court in Chandigarh had sentenced Zaidi and his team of seven police officers and personnel to life imprisonment in the custodial death case.

In 2017, Suraj, an accused in the Gudiya rape and murder case that took place in Kotkhai, Shimla, died due to police torture in police custody. This case was transferred from Shimla to Chandigarh CBI court for hearing, on which the Chandigarh CBI court gave its verdict in January.

Zahoor Zaidi had challenged the decision of the CBI court in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Today the High Court has given its verdict on this petition and Zaidi’s sentence has been suspended for the time being until the hearing on his appeal is completed in the court.
