Even before the start of the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League, many players have withdrawn due to various reasons. Many players have withdrawn their names from IPL 2026 due to injury and fitness, while many have different reasons. Due to their ouster, the equation of the franchises has also deteriorated, although they have the option of replacement. This has opened the fate of those players who had registered their names in the auction but no one bought it.
Many players who have been ruled out of IPL 2026 have suffered serious injuries, which will take time to recover. Considering the fitness of Nuwan Thushara, Sri Lanka Cricket Board did not give NOC. Mitchell Starc was stopped by his domestic cricket board under workload management. England cricketer Ben Duckett also withdrew his name from IPL, he wants to focus on international cricket.
How is replacement of players in IPL?
When a player is out of the IPL, the franchises announce his replacement, but there are some rules for this too. Franchises can select replacements from the registered player pool. Only those players who had registered their names for the auction can be replacements. Let us tell you that BCCI does not make it public, only the list of shortlisted players is revealed.
BCCI has given big relief to IPL teams since last year. The franchise can choose its replacement for up to 12 matches of the IPL league, whereas earlier it was up to 7 matches.
What is the ‘like-for-like’ rule?
The salary of the player coming as a replacement cannot be more than that of the player in whose place he has been selected. The reason behind this is that teams cannot spend more than the ‘salary cap’. Replacement does not have to be like-for-like. For example, it is not necessary that if a bowler is out, the franchise has to choose only bowling, but the batsman can also be included in the team as a replacement. For example, Chennai Super Kings had selected South African batsman Dewald Brevis in place of injured bowler Gurjapneet Singh.
If a player is replaced due to health reasons then he cannot play the full version again. But teams can retain him for the next edition. Last year, BCCI had allowed temporary replacements, although they cannot be retained for the next season.
